Arakkulam Temple Associated With First Priest Of Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple

Dharma Sastha Temple, also famous as Arakkulam Sastha Temple, at Arakkulam Village in Idukki District in Kerala is associated with the first priest of Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple in Kerala.

The temple is located in the same spot where the house or mana of Karottumadam Karnavar. He was the priest at the Sabarimala Temple. Due to old age and illness, Karottumadam Karnavar could no longer offer puja and prayers in the Sabarimala Temple. The ardent devotee offered intense prayers to Ayyappa with single-minded devotion and as result it is said that Ayyappa appeared in the middle of his house. This spot was later converted into the present day temple.

The subsidiary deities worshipped in the temple are Ganpati, Malikapurathamma and Naga Devatas.

The annual temple festival in the temple is held from Makaram 1 (January 14 or January 15) to Makaram 18.

The flag for the annual festival is brought from the Sabarimala Temple.

The temple follows the Padahadi festival in which importance is given to Melam (i.e., playing of various musical instruments).
