The secret to success is to put your heart even to your smallest acts – Swami Sivananda

There is no virtue greater than self-reliance. The possession of this important quality is an important prerequisite for all aspirants who search after Truth.

You are your own physician. You are your own savior and redeemer. Nobody can give you freedom. You will have to tread the spiritual path yourself. Rely on your own self exertion. Teachers and books can only help you to a certain extent.

Suffering infuses mercy in the heart and softens it. Suffering strengthens. Suffering produces dispassion…Therefore, suffering is a blessing in disguise.

Put your heart, mind, intellect and soul even to your smallest acts. This is the secret of success. Swami Sivananda

Why Hindu Widows Wear White Dress?

There is a belief that all Hindu widows wear white dress. But this is not the real fact. Not all Hindu widows wear white dress. This is limited to a few Hindu communities.  White dress is a symbol suggesting that the woman is no longer interested in the materialistic world. She lost colors, good things and all happiness in life with the death of her husband. But today many Hindu widows are not ready to put on this symbol and opt for remarriage and also lead a healthy and happy life by earning on their own.

White dress for Hindu widows is a symbol of the past for many modern Hindu women. But this is not the case with women who have no financial independence. Widows who are forced to depend on parents and in-laws are forced to wear the white dress and forgo all happiness in life.

Hindu society needs to wake up to color the dress of the widows. The only way we can achieve this is by setting up institutions that will provide independent financial opportunities to Hindu widows.

Just as a calf goes to its mother, seeking her out from among thousands of cows, so every action follows the doer.

Sugarcane does not give up its sweetness even when thrown into the crushing machine, similarly great ones do not give up their good qualities even when they are weakened.

He is a wise person who is not prisoner of hopes and desires – Swami Sukhabhodhananda Sayings

A wise person is one who is happy, with or without external wealth; one who is not prisoner of hopes and desires. One who has the wisdom to transform pain into power.

Our weakness results in disappointment. Disappointment should be cremated and not garlanded. People derive a sadistic pleasure from disappointment. This is a primitive pleasure. To cremate disappointment, one should strengthen one’s strengths. The greatest strength comes from the energy of commitment and brings in excellence in all walks of life. Few people traverse the road to success without a puncture or two, but it is commitment to excellence that takes them through. Commitment creates integrity.

Shudhi Panchakam in Hindu Tradition

Shudhi Panchakam is five areas that need constant attention in daily life as per Hindu tradition. The five areas that come under Shudhi Panchakam are cleanliness of the body, keeping the mind calm and clean, keeping panch indirya (five senses - touch, taste, smell, sight, and hearing) under control, good speech and cleanliness of one’s house.

Taking bath every day morning and evening in normal temperature water falls under Sharira Shudhi or the cleanliness of the body. Sharira Shudhi also includes keeping teeth, nails, eyes, nose and ears clean.

Next is Mana Shudhi or keeping the mind calm and clean. If we let the mind to wander it is sure to enter Adharmic areas. This will pollute the mind. Ego, angry and jealousy are the main pollutants of the mind. To keep the mind clean one should cultivate love and piety for all living beings, also courage and dharmic thoughts.

Osho Rajaneesh Thoughts and Quotes

The more things accumulate the more life is wasted because they have to be purchased at the cost of life.

We go on believing that we are separate. We are not; not even for a single moment. Drop the idea of separation and the fear of death disappears. If you become one with the whole you will live forever. You will go beyond birth and death.

One has just to be oneself. That is my basic message. The moment you accept yourself as you are all burdens, all mountainous burdens simply disappear.

Don’t try to force anything. Let life be a deep let go. See god opening millions of flowers everyday without forcing the buds.
Osho Rajaneesh

Panvati or Panoti – A Woman Symbolically Representing Bad Astrological Influences

Panvati, or Panoti, is a woman mentioned in Hindu scriptures and she symbolically represents the all the bad astrological influences caused by the Navgrahas or nine planets. The most popular image of Panvati is that of Hanuman trampling on her and holding her hair.

As per Hindu astrology or Jyothi Shastra, the Navagrahas play very important role in the fate of a man. The good alignment of nine planets is very important for prosperity and peaceful life as per horoscope. But usually the planets are never in good alignment and cause lot of trouble and these troubles are symbolically represented by Panvati.

The popular belief is that Hanuman has the power to overcome the Navgrahas. Therefore people pray to Hanuman to find solutions to troubles caused by the nine planets.

Thus Hanuman overpowering Panvati represents his ability to keep the Navgrahas under check and help his devotees.

What is the highest refuge of virtue? Liberty is the highest refuge of virtue.

The most valuable of all possessions? Knowledge

The best of all gains? Health.

The best of all kinds of happiness? Contentment. The Situation - One day during the exile, the Pandavas were extremely thirsty. Nakula, the youngest of Pandavas, went to get some water from a nearby pond. Mahanarayana Upanishad Teachings

Neither by action nor by progeny nor by wealth but by renunciation alone one attains immortality (or Self-knowledge).

That in which all this universe exists together and into which it dissolves. That in which all the gods remain enjoying their respective powers – That certainly is whatever that has been in the past and whatever indeed is to come in the future. This cause of the universe, Prajapati, is supported by His own imperishable nature described as absolute ether.

Right is austerity. Truth is austerity. Understanding of the scriptures is austerity. Subduing of one’s senses is austerity. Restraint of the body through such means like fast is austerity. Cultivation of a peaceable disposition is austerity. Giving gifts without selfish motives is austerity. Worship is austerity.

Naglok in Hindu Puranas – Underworld Where Snakes or Nagas Reside – Nagaloka

Naglok, or Nagaloka, is the world of snakes and is underground – beneath the Earth. As per Hindu Puranas there are seven worlds below the earth and the Naglok is the last one. Vishnu Purana states that Patal or the underworld is 70,000 yojanas below the earth. One Yojana is equal to 8 miles.

The seven worlds occupy 10,000 yojanas each. So Nagaloka is located nearly 130,000 yojanas below the earth.

Sage Narada has mentioned that Naglok is beautiful than heaven, or Swarg, the abode of Devas or Demi Gods. Sunlight does not reach the Nagaloka. Puranas mention that the place is lighted up with the light emitting from the Nagamani atop the fangs of the snakes.

Naglok was built by Mayan – the Asura Architect.  There is no death, old age or diseases at the world of Nagas. The place is ruled by Vasuki.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is – Bhagavad Gita Sayings

Hell has three doors – lust, rage, and greed.

As the blazing fire reduces wood to ashes, similarly, the fire of self knowledge reduces all karma to ashes.

For one who has been honored, dishonor is worse than death.

A mirror is obscured by dust, just as the embryo rests deep within the womb, wisdom is hidden by selfish desire.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

Swami Veda Bharati Thoughts – Loving and not expecting something is the secret of being loved

Learn to give love, instead of asking for it. Stop being self-centered; cry no longer words such as ‘I was rejected’, ‘I am unloved’, ‘I am lonely’. When you do this, you are re-enforcing these thoughts. People see you and move away because they are afraid of what you might demand.

Loving and not expecting something is the secret of being loved. Avoid clinging and resist the temptation of wanting to pour out your own story. Think of selfless ways of loving, without fear of rejection. Even before you begin to feel that you are being loved, you will begin to feel a sense of satisfaction because you have been selfless.

Find the positive concealed in the negative, free the mind of being in conflict. By learning to resolve conflicts, de-condition the mind of its conditioning. Lift it from habit patterns, free it from running in set grooves, and thereby develop fresh insights of positive nature into relationships, communication and events as well as philosophical realities and truths. Religion is behavior and not mere belief – Dr S Radhakrishnan - Words to Ponder

Religion is behavior and not mere belief. It is not God that is worshipped but the group or authority that claims to speak in His name. Sin becomes disobedience to authority not violation of integrity.
When we realize the universal Self in us, when and what may anybody fear or worship?

Death is never an end or obstacle but at most the beginning of new steps.

Man cannot be satisfied by wealth or by learning but by developing the quality of detachment, of renunciation, making himself the instrument of a higher purpose. It is these that the realization of the fulfillment of man abides, and it should be our endeavor to develop it. Dr S Radhakrishnan

Symbolism in Saffron Clothes or Robes Worn by Hindu Saints

Hindu saints generally wear saffron colored clothes. Today saffron color is associated with holy men of other religions too. White is another preferred color by Hindu saints. The choice of saffron robes by Hindu saints has a deep symbolism associated with it.

Saffron symbolically represents Agni or fire. Agni is light. A saint ushers in the light of knowledge and leads a person from darkness into light.

Another quality of Agni is that it accepts anything and transforms it. A saint similarly accepts everything and purifies and absorbs it. The saint leaves out all that is bad and gives out pure knowledge.

Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha – Words of Wisdom

Krishna says in the Bhagavad Gita that there is no option to act or not act because all activities are designed and maintained by Nature that has three spiritual constituents - satva, rajo and tamo gunas.

Satva guna represents light, happiness and wisdom, rajo guna represents all forms of activity and the causes for them such as attraction, repulsion, and jealousy. Tamo guna represents ignorance, lethargy and sleep. These three propel all activity. All three gunas are at work in all your actions - only the proportion keeps changing. In spiritual masters, there will be larger proportion of satva guna, closely followed in smaller proportion of rajo guna. And tamas will follow. In agriculturists, rajo guna will be foremost, followed by tamo guna and then satva guna.

Since we cannot escape the pressure of these three gunas, then where is the question of any activity being useless and dropping it?

Importance of Yellow Colored Rice Grains on Hindu Wedding Cards

It is a practice to stick yellow colored rice grains on the wedding cards by many Hindu communities. This is because yellow color is considered highly auspicious – yellow stands for prosperity and love and is also associated with learning.

The practice of giving uncooked Rice grains mixed with yellow is more popular in rural areas in North India and western parts of India.

The yellow colored rice is often kept inside the card or stuck on the cards. Another key element that is a must in a Hindu wedding card is Sri Ganesha.

Anandamurti Gurumaa – Words of Inspiration

Don’t say that you are ill fated by your karma, just have a fire in your heart and be very adamant in your prayer and be very-very sincere in your prayer. And if you are a real seeker then soon you would be able to clear up this foggy state of mind.

Freedom comes from wisdom, which comes with knowledge and courage. So be courageous, be wise and fly! No one can stop you.

Hope is neither positive nor negative. But when you cling on to your hope and are so adamant and stubborn that it must be fulfilled, you have opened up all the doors for depression and pain and aggression. True, without hope, how would you live your life? But if hope is going to be the reason to bring depression in your life, then I would say, don’t have any hope. Just do your work. Don’t look for the rewards or awards once your work has finished.

Difficulties and frustrations are a part of human life and no one can run away from them. Don’t ever dare to. None has ever been able to run away from frustrations or kick away…

Story of Vaishno Devi and Sri Ram

There are numerous stories associated with Mata Vaishno Devi. One of the stories is that of Vaishno Devi meeting Sri Ram as a child. The couple while praying to Mother Goddess had promised that they would fulfil all the wishes of the child.

A baby girl child was born to the childless couple and she was named Trikuta. From a very young age, Trikuta showed high spiritual inclination and was an ardent devotee of Srihari Vishnu. When she reached adulthood, she asked her parents’ permission to meditate by the sea.

Deepak Chopra Thoughts

Life is like a tree and its root is consciousness. Therefore, once we tend the root, the tree as a whole will be healthy. Nature controls healing from this deeper level already, for every cell participates in the body’s inner intelligence, responding to the patient’s thoughts, emotions, desires, beliefs and self image.

Sad or depressing thoughts produce changes in brain chemistry that have a detrimental effect on the body’s physiology. Likewise, happy thoughts of all kinds, loving thoughts, thoughts of peace and tranquility, of compassion, friendliness, kindness, generosity, affection, warmth and intimacy each produce a corresponding state of physiology via the flux of neurotransmitters and hormones in the central nervous system.

We have a pharmacy inside us that is absolutely exquisite. It makes the right medicine, for the precise time, for the right target organ – with no side effects.

Narrow Vision and Envy Have Missed the True Essence and Message of Religion Which is Love and Compassion – Mata Amritanandamayi Teachings

There are thousands ready to die for their religion, but only are few willing to live by its principles. Because of their narrow vision and envy, they have missed the true essence and message of religion which is love and compassion.

The heart sends blood to every cell of the body, and in this way the cells are nourished. The same blood then flows back to the heart. If the flow is obstructed, the person will die. We need to learn this process of give and take from the heart. For the benefit of others, and also for ourselves, we should have the attitude of caring and sharing. We are all links in the chain of life. If one link is weakened, it will affect the strength of the whole chain.

Everyone in the world should be able to sleep without fear, at least for one night. Everyone should be able to eat to his fill, at least for one day. There should be at least one day when hospitals see no one admitted due to violence. By doing selfless service for at least one day, everyone should help the…

You must keep the temple clean if you wish to install there the living Presence - Sri Aurobindo Thoughts

There are two powers – a fixed and unfailing aspiration that calls from below and a supreme Grace from above that answers – that alone work together in achieving great aims and overcoming difficult things.

But the supreme Grace will act only in the conditions of the Light and the Truth; it will not act in conditions laid upon it by the Falsehood and the Ignorance. For if it were to yield to the demands of the Falsehood, it would defeat its own purpose.

If you open yourself on one side or in one part to the Truth and on another side are constantly opening the gates to hostile forces, it is vain to expect that the divine Grace will abide with you. You must keep the temple (body and mind) clean if you wish to install there the living Presence.

On Reading Spiritual Book and Self Realization – Ramana Maharishi

A spiritual book is like asking you to see yourself in a mirror. The mirror (book) reflects only what is on the face (in consciousness). If you consult the mirror after washing your face (realizing self awareness), the face will be shown to be clean (free of confusion).

Otherwise, the mirror will indicate, there is dirt here (confusion), come back after washing (clarity).

A book does the same thing. If you read the book after realizing the Self, everything will be easily understood. But if you read it before realizing the Self, it will say, ‘First, set yourself right; and then see me.’ That is all. So:, first, know the Self!

Shri Nimishananda Sayings

Divine grace helps us transcend, not only spiritually, but also physically, mentally and materialistically. The process of transcendence doesn’t mean renouncing the world; it means going beyond attachments, living life according to the dharma than in a karmic way.

With intense faith and surrender, we should take time out daily and visualize that our soul is making us aware about the existence of the Self. This repetitive visualization takes us to actualization; that is to see the existence of our luminescent Self.

When we commune with truth, our soul starts receiving cosmic energy. Cosmic energy gets converted into Divine Grace within us and propels our soul to radiate divinity. This attracts peace, confidence, and hope, making it easier for us to live life.

Silence is the first door to spiritual eminence - Adi Shankaracharya Thoughts

There is a self-existent Reality. That Reality is the Witness of the three states of consciousness. That Reality is the knower in all states of consciousness – waking, dreaming, and dreamless sleep. It is the Self.

The nature of one Reality must be known by one’s own clear spiritual perception; it cannot be know through a priest or saint. Similarly the form of the moon can only be known through one’s own eyes. How can it be known through others?

It is ignorance that causes us to identify ourselves with the body, the ego, the sense, or anything that is not the Atman. He is wise who overcomes this ignorance by devotion to the Atman.

Wisdom does not attain completeness except through the living of life – Rabindranath Tagore

When we are restless we raise dust all about us and we forget the supreme truth that ‘we are.’

Work, especially good work, becomes easy when desire has learnt to discipline itself.

Wisdom does not attain completeness except through the living of life.

Strenuousness is the open foe of attainment. The strength that wins is calm and has an exhaustless source in its passive depth.

It is not by meticulous care in avoiding all contaminations that we can keep our spirit clean and give it grace, but by urging it to give vigorous expression to its inner life in the very midst of all the dust and heat.
