Manikaran located at an altitude of over 1,800 meter is famous for its hot springs. The story of the origin of the hot springs is associated with Sheshnag and the earrings of Goddess Parvati. Legend has it that Goddess Parvati and Shiva were engaged in amorous sport in the modern Manikaran area. Maa Parvati lost and earring in the river. From deep within its waters, Sheshnag found the jewel but refused to return it. Goddess Parvati was provoked and she threatened the destruction of the universe.
