Anadi In Hindu Religion – Whose Beginning Is Not Known

In Hindu religion, the word anadi is used when the beginning of something is not known. However, the term anadi is not actually used by Advaitins in that particular sense as the question of traceability or non-traceability of the beginning does not apply to Brahman (the Supreme Being). Bhamaha – Luminary In The Field Of Alankara Shastra

One of the luminaries in the field of alankara shastra was Bhamaha (7 th to 8 th century CE) who defined kavya (poetry) for the first time in the history of poetics. His definition of poetry as sabda (the word) and artha (meaning) characterized by togetherness resulted in developing the term sahitya for literature. Bhamaha heralded the alankara school in his work as Kavyalankara. The alankara shastra shaped into full-fledged discipline owing to his treatise and views. Bhamaha’s sarcastic remark that ordinary people will be at loss to enjoy such poems that could be understood only with the help of a commentary, is taken by some scholars to be a pointer to Bhatti who boasts of his scholarship in adopting a tense style which only intelligent people would have access to. Bhatti, the author of Ravana-Vadha-Kavya or simply Bhatti Kavya, seems to be an elder contemporary of Bhamaha. The narrative takes a dramatic turn during the Ashwamedha sacrifice conducted by Yudhisthira, Arjuna's elder brother, after the Kurukshetra war. Arjuna, as the protector of the sacrificial horse, encountered Babruvahana. In the ensuing conflict, Arjuna was tragically killed by his own son. However, the story doesn't end there. Ulupi, ano

Abhivyakti – Theory Of Rasa Realization

The theory of abhivyakti, propounded by the celebrated Kashmiri writer Abhinavagupta, holds a significant place in the realm of alankara shastra, particularly through his seminal commentary, "Abhinavabharati," on the Natyashastra. Abhinavagupta's insightful analysis in this work is considered a landmark in the field, shedding light on the intricate dynamics of rasa realization. In his exploration, Abhinavagupta delves into earlier theories, offering a comprehensive discussion before asserting the importance of sadharanikaran, or generalization, in the attainment of rasa realization. According to him, human emotions lie dormant in the minds of individuals and persist through successive births as impressions known as vasana. These impressions, coupled with a universal sympathy, create the foundation for the audience to "feel" or "experience" the state of relish, culminating in the aesthetic experience of rasa.
