Worship Of God In Human Form – Teachings From Hinduism

Worship Of God In Human Form – Teachings From Hinduism is an extract from the editorialof Prabuddha Bharata Magazine January 2002 Issue.
Adoration means to love something deeply and with respect. Everyone in this world has something to adore. While most people adore the world and its enjoyments, there are a few who adore something different, something higher.
As long as we feel that our body-mind complex is real, we see the external world as real and it occupies our whole being. When such a person prays to God, he does it mostly to be freed from some physical or mental affliction, or for worldly prosperity: name, fame, power, and position. These, according to the Bhagavad Gita, are two of the four types of people who worship God. Such people adore God as a human being and even conceive of Him as married and having children, if that suits them!

Swami Vivekananda throws light on an important truth: the constitutional necessity for such people to worship God with a human form. He says, ‘…

Tirumala Raya – The Last Of The Vijayanagara Kings

Tirumala Raya is the last of the Vijayanagara kings. In the battle of Talikota of 1565 AD the Vijayanagara army was defeated by the allied Deccan Sultans, but all was not lost of the Vijayanagara empire. Tirumala, the brother of Rama Raya, rebuilt an army and restored the prestige of the kingdom to a considerable extent. Sadashiva Raya was then the nominal ruler, but in 1570 Tirumala Raya captured the throne for himself. With his accession, the Aravidu dynasty started in Vijayanagara.
Tirumala Raya abdicated the throne in favor of his son Sri Ranga I, who had been the victor of Penukonda. The book Sriranjani, a commentary on Gita Govinda by Tirumala Raya himself, mentions this. With this coming of an Aravidu line of kings to the throne, Srivaishnavism received royal patronage.

Teaching from Mahanarayana Upanishad

A collection of teachings from Mahanarayana Upanishad.

The universe emanated in the form of waves from the supreme Fount that is the source of enjoyment to creatures. (Mahanarayana Upanishad Anuvaaka XII, Shloka 8)
Physically speaking, You and I, the sun, the moon, and the stars are but the little waves or wavelets, foam and bubbles in the midst of an infinite Ocean of matter.
Similarly, “Both body and mind are but mere names or little Wavelets in the ocean of matter, the ‘Samashti’; Behind that idea of the unity of whole show, The real soul is one. There is but one soul through – out the universe, all is but one existence.
Realization lies in the fact that the ocean is real and its waves are unreal. The bottom of the lake can be seen only in the absence of the waves. Similarly, Self can be realized only when the thought-waves cease.

Previous Birth Of Sage Narada - Story

The previous birth of Sage Narada happened during the previous cycle of creation. As per stories in Puranas, Sage Narada is present in all the four Yugas of this kalpa.

During one Kalpa (a day of Brahma), there lived a handsome Gandharva with a melodious voice. Once he was in an inebriated state and entered the assembly of Devas who were performing rituals. Instead of singing glories of God he sang amorous songs detailing the beauty of celestial women and lovemaking.

The angry Devas cursed him to be born on earth. This was at the fag end of a Kalpa and it was Kali Yuga on earth.
On earth, he was born in the house of a servant. When the boy was five years old, a group of saints came to his town. He got the opportunity to be with them. This close association with the sages at the young age developed in him devotion for God.

From that day, he roamed around singing the glories of God. Later he sat in meditation and did intense penance. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Vishnu blessed him t…
