Makkavum Makkalum Theyyam is a rare theyyam performed in Kannur district of Kerala. Makkam belonged to Nambiar or Nair community and she is the only woman saint who has a theyyam. The story of Maakavum Makkalum theyyam is one of treachery and revenge. Kadangot Aaroodha Tharavadu Nambiars were the erstwhile rulers of Payyannur and other adjacent areas of Kunhimangalam and Ramanthali. Still the family is based at Kunhimangalam and is a part of the great history of Payyannur and other adjacent areas. Kunji Makkam was the daughter of Unni Cheriyayi of Kunhimangalam Kadangot Aaroodha Tharavadu. She was the youngest of the twelve brothers. All the brothers were generals in the army of Kolathiri king. She married Kutti Nambiar and she had twins – Chathu and Cheeru.
