Makkavum Makkalum Theyyam – Story – Information

Makkavum Makkalum Theyyam is a rare theyyam performed in Kannur district of Kerala. Makkam belonged to Nambiar or Nair community and she is the only woman saint who has a theyyam. The story of Maakavum Makkalum theyyam is one of treachery and revenge. Kadangot Aaroodha Tharavadu Nambiars were the erstwhile rulers of Payyannur and other adjacent areas of Kunhimangalam and Ramanthali. Still the family is based at Kunhimangalam and is a part of the great history of Payyannur and other adjacent areas. Kunji Makkam was the daughter of Unni Cheriyayi of Kunhimangalam Kadangot Aaroodha Tharavadu. She was the youngest of the twelve brothers. All the brothers were generals in the army of Kolathiri king. She married Kutti Nambiar and she had twins – Chathu and Cheeru. As the Kadangot Aaroodha Tharavadu followed Marumakathayam, Makkam and her children stayed in the family and they were to get the property. Padinjare Chamundi Theyyam is powerful theyyam associated Shaiva bhootaganas. As per the popular story, Mahadeva Shiva performed a yajna and seven deities appeared from it. Padinjare Chamundi Theyyam was one of the deities appeared from the yajna. She once appeared at Padinjare Veedu in Parathoor to quench her thirst, here she found half man half lion form killing and eating cows. She drove away the powerful beast. Prasadamandanam – Temple Architecture Text In Hinduism

Prasadamandanam is a treatise on architecture and temple-related crafts and ceremonies. This small text was written by Sutradhara Mandana and edited by Pandit Jagaddhara Zadoo. Prasadamandanam contains eight chapters with an introduction by the editor. Chapter one of Prasadamandanam includes a few miscellaneous topics connected  with architecture and iconography, covering the temples in Dravidian, Nagara, Bhumija and Kavina styles. Chapter two deals with facts on the plinth of a temple or a palace in relation to its shape, size and situation. The third chapter of the book describes the mandovara or the superstructure of the plinth. Chendayad Nillangal Thundiyil Madappura temple is located at Chendayad near Puthoor, Kannur district, Kerala. The temple is dedicated Muthappan and other famous deities worshipped in the tharavadu and kavu in the region. The annual thira – theyyam festival in the temple is held for three days in Malayalam Dhanu Masam – Dhanu 28, Dhanu 29 and Dhanu 30 (January 12, January 13 and January 14). The annual thira and theyyam festival in the temple is famous for various powerful theyyams including Muthappan theyyam and Thiruvappana theyyam. Food Offering To Chandra – Moon God In Hinduism

Chandra, the Moon God in Hinduism, is one of the Navagrahas – the nine celestial bodies. They are propitiated for overcoming bad luck in life and to solve horoscope related problems. Food offering or bhog or naivedya to Moon is part of the pujas and rituals. The details regarding flowers, food offerings, herbs, etc are found in the Matsya Purana. The main food offering to Moon is sweet made of ghee and milk especially white in color. Any sweet offering made from rice sprinkled with white flowers is the ideal bhog or naivedyam to Chandra Bhagavan. The color associated with Moon or Chandra is white, the flowers offered are white oleander flower and the main grain offering (uncooked) is rice. Kunnaru Kallara Tharavad temple is located at Kunnaru near Payyanur in Kannur district, Kerala. This is an ancient tharavadu temple and the deities are those that are worshipped in the region especially in tharavadu and kavukal.
