Marakalathamma Theyyam, also Shoola Kumari Amma or Sri Shoola Koodariamma, is a powerful female theyyam performed in many kavus, tharavadu and temples in Kannur and Kasaragod districts in Kerala.
The story of Marakalathamma Theyyam begins with the head of the Sri Shoola Illam going on a voyage across the sea as part of his business. His wife who was seven months pregnant tries to stop him from going on a long journey.
The head of the Shoola Illam family reaches Thiruvalathoor and here he marries a Brahmin woman and has a daughter with her. The daughter was called Shoola Kumari Amma or Sri Shoola Koodariamma.
The head of Shoola Illam family again decided to go on a voyage from Thiruvalathoor without taking along with him his wife and daughter. But the daughter hid herself in the ship.
When the ship arrived back at Sri Shoola Illam, the son of the head of the family had a dream about the arrival of a divine virgin. He arrived at the port with lamps to welcome the virgin.
She was from that day worshipped as Shoolakumariamma.
She is also known as Tiruvarmozhi and Narayudamala.
This theyyam is performed at the Mayyil Kavinmoola Cherupazhassi Sree Puthiya Bhagavathy temple.

ശ്രീ ശൂലയില്ലത്തെ തിരുവടിത്തങ്ങള്‍ കപ്പലേറി കടല്‍ വാണിഭത്തിനു പോകവേ ഏഴു മാസം ഗര്‍ഭിണിയായ ഭാര്യ തടസ്സം നിന്നെങ്കിലും കൂട്ടാക്കാതെ യാത്ര ചെയ്ത് തിരുവാലത്തൂര്‍ എത്തിയ തിരുവടിത്തങ്ങള്‍ അവിടെ ഒരു പട്ടത്തിയെ കല്യാണം കഴിക്കുകയും അതില്‍ ഒരു പെണ്‍കുഞ്ഞ് ഉണ്ടാകുകയും ചെയ്തു. അവളാണ് ശൂല കുമാരിയെന്ന ശ്രീശൂലകുഠാരിയമ്മ.
മാസങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് ശേഷം ഭാര്യയേയും മകളെയും കാണാതെ കപ്പലില്‍ മടങ്ങിയപ്പോള്‍ മകള്‍ ശൂലകുമാരിയും കപ്പലില്‍ കയറിക്കൂടി.
ശ്രീ ശൂലയില്ലത്തെ തിരുവടിത്തങ്ങളുടെ മകന്‍ നിദ്രാഗോപാലന്‍ ഇത് സ്വപ്നത്തില്‍ കാണുകയും കന്യകയെ വിളക്കും തളികയുമായി ചെന്ന് എതിരേല്‍ക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. കന്യകയെ ശൂലകുമാരിയമ്മ എന്ന പേരില്‍ പിന്നീട് ഇവര്‍ ആരാധിക്കപ്പെട്ടു തുടങ്ങി. ഇവര്‍ മരക്കലത്തമ്മ എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.
എന്നാല്‍ ഇതേ ദേവിയെ തന്നെ തിരുവാര്‍മ്മൊഴിയെന്നും, നരയൂധമാലയെന്നും വിളിച്ചു വരുന്നു.
