Chendayad Nillangal Thundiyil Madappura Temple – Theyyam – Thira Festival

Chendayad Nillangal Thundiyil Madappura temple is located at Chendayad near Puthoor, Kannur district, Kerala. The temple is dedicated Muthappan and other famous deities worshipped in the tharavadu and kavu in the region. The annual thira – theyyam festival in the temple is held for three days in Malayalam Dhanu Masam – Dhanu 28, Dhanu 29 and Dhanu 30 (January 12, January 13 and January 14).

The annual thira and theyyam festival in the temple is famous for various powerful theyyams including Muthappan theyyam and Thiruvappana theyyam.

The Thira utsavam begins with the kavil kayaral ritual. Vellattam, Kulichezhunellathu, melam, traditional temple performing art forms, various pujas and rituals, offerings by devotees etc are part of the annual festival.

Sankranti, in every Malayalam month, and Vishu are important days in the temple. The temple has a tastefully decorated chathura sreekovil. There are spaces for other deities mainly on square platforms and in small sreekovils.
