Nillangal Sree Neyyan Kavu Temple – Theyyam Festival

Nillangal Sree Neyyan Kavu temple is located at Chendayad near Puthoor, Kannur district, Kerala. The temple is dedicated Muthappan and other famous deities worshipped in the tharavadu and kavu in the region. The annual thira – theyyam festival in the temple is held for two days in Malayalam Makara Masam – Makaram 23, and Makaram 24 (February 6 and February 7).


Sankranti, in every Malayalam month, and Vishu are important days in the temple. The temple has a tastefully decorated chathura sreekovil. There are spaces for other deities mainly on square platforms and in small sreekovils

The annual thira and theyyam festival in the temple is famous for various powerful theyyams including Karanavar theyyam, Thekkan Gulikan theyyam, Vasoorimala theyyam, Karimkaali theyyam and Sasthappan - Kuttichathan theyyam.

The Thira utsavam begins with the kavil kayaral ritual. Vellattam, Kulichezhunellathu, melam, traditional temple performing art forms, various pujas and rituals, offerings by devotees etc are part of the annual festival.
