Unique Food Offering During Panguni Festival At Srirangam Ranganatha Swamy Temple

The annual Panguni festival (March – April) at Srirangam Ranganatha Swamy temple is famous for a unique food offering known as akkaravadisal or attakara vadisal. This is a unique sweet preparation and is associated with Goddess Andal.

The unique offering is prepared by boiling milk along with rice and passi paruppu (whole green gram). The milk is boiled in slow fire till the rice and green gram dissolve in the milk. Ghee and jaggery syrup are mixed to this to make the unique prasadam.

The popular belief is that the akkaravadisal was promised by Andal to Srirangam Ranganatha Swamy. The sweet offering is offered to Sri Ranganatha and Thayyar (Goddess Lakshmi) during Panguni Utsavam.

The offering is also made in large quantities Margazhi masam (December - January) at the famous Srivilliputhur temple. In this preparation green gram is not used. Roasted rice, ghee and rockcandy is boiled in milk. The milk is thickened and fried cashews and almonds are added to it.
