Oladathazha Kumman Kavu Temple – Thira – Theyyam Festival

Oladathazha Kumman Kavu temple is located on the Alavil – Azhikode Road, Azhikode North in Kannur district, Kerala. The annual thira – theyyam festival in the temple is held for three days in Malayalam Makara Masam – Makaram 3, Makaram 4, and Makaram 5 (January 17, Jan 18, and January 19). The shrine is dedicated to Thotunkara Bhagavathy and other famous deities worshipped in the tharavadu and kavu in the region.


The temple has a rectangular sreekovil which is tastefully decorated as per traditional temple architectural style – two main deities are worshipped in the sreekovil with separate doors. There are other small srikovil (s) and square platforms of other deities.

The annual thira and theyyam festival in the temple is famous for various powerful theyyams including Thotunkara Bhagavathy theyyam, Vayanat Kulavan theyyam, Puliyoor Kannan theyyam, Karnavar theyyam, and Thekkan Gulikan theyyam.

Kavu kayaral, vellattam, kulichezhunellathu and other rituals, temple folk art forms, procession and melam are part of the annual festival.
