Kizhunna Parakkandi Kavu Temple – Theyyam – Thira Festival

Kizhunna Parakkandi Kavu temple is located on the Kizhunna – Kadappuram road near Thottada in Kannur district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to deities worshipped in the tharavadu and kavu in the region. The annual thira – theyyam festival in the temple is held for three days in Malayalam Makara Masam – Makram 5, Makaram 6 and Makaram 7 (January 19, January 20 and January 21).

Puja is held on the Sankranthi day as per Malayalam calendar. There are two main shrines – small decorated chathura sreekovil (s). The other deities are worshipped on square platforms and also in small sreekovils. Vishu is an important festival in the temple.

The Thira utsavam begins with the kavil kayaral ritual.

The important theyyams performed in the temple as part of the annual Kaliyattam and theyyam festivals are Karnavar theyyam, Balikadan theyyam, Yogeeshwaran Veeran theyyam (these three theyyams perform vellattam). Kulichezhunellathu is performed by Karnavar theyyam and Kurumba Bhagavathy theyyam. Yogiyar Malakari theyyam and thirumudi of Yogishwaran theyyam are performed in the shrine.
