Karimbam Kundathil Kavu Puthiya Bhagavathi Temple – Thira – Theyyam Festival

Karimbam Kundathil Puthiya Bhagavathi Kavu temple is located at Karimbam near Thaliparamba in Kannur district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathi and other famous deities worshipped in the tharavadu and kavu in the region. The annual thira – theyyam festival in the temple is held for five days in Malayalam Makara Masam – Makram 2, Makaram 3, Makaram 4, Makaram 5 and Makaram 6 (January 16, Jan 17, Jan 18, January 19 and January 20).



Puja is held on the Sankranthi day as per Malayalam calendar. There is a main shrine here – small decorated chathura sreekovil. The other deities are worshipped on square platforms and also in small sreekovils. Vishu is an important festival in the temple.

The Thira utsavam begins with the kavil kayaral ritual.

The important theyyams performed in the temple as part of the annual Kaliyattam and theyyam festivals are Illamkolam theyyam, Bhadrakali theyyam, Karan theyyam, Nagakanya theyyam, Puthiya Bhagavathy theyyam, Veeran theyyam, Vishnumurthy theyyam, Thekkan Gulikan theyyam and Thaiparadevatha theyyam.
