Thee Chamundi theyyam is a powerful theyyam that is performed during the annual Kaliyattam and thira festival in certain temples and kavu in Kannur and Kasargod regions of Kerala. As per information, the theyyam is performed by Bhagavan Vishnu. The story of Thee Chamundi is associated with jealousy of Agni or fire god.
Bhagavan Vishnu took the avatar of Narasimha and annihilated
demon Hiranyakashipu. All living beings in the universe including Devas
showered praise on Bhagavan Vishnu for killing the demon. They were all dancing
in joy. Rishi chanted the name of Narayana. The 14 worlds reverberated with
Narayana Mantra.
Agni, the fire god, did not participate in the celebrations. He also announced that killing of Hiranyakashipu was nothing great and it could have been done by anyone and it need not be celebrated.
Bhagavan Vishnu got angry at Agni. To kill the pride of
Agni, Vishnu jumped into a sacrificial pit. He then got hold of Agni and
thrashed him. Bhagavan Vishnu turned the burning fire pit into ashes and
disappeared from the universe.
Thee Chamundi theyyam performs this divine event of Vishnu
Bhagavan fighting with Agni.
This is a very popular theyyam and is performed in numerous
sacred places, kavu, tharavadu and temples in Kannur and Kasaragod region. The
theyyam attracts a huge crowd as the theyyam is known to enter a huge bed of burning
charcoal.
- ഇഹലോകത്തിനു ഭാരമാം ഹിരണ്യകശിപുവിനെ വധിക്കാന്‍ വിശ്വംഭരനാം വിഷ്ണുഭഗവാന്‍ നരസിംഹരൂപം ധരിച്ചു.
- തൃസന്ധ്യക്ക് ഉമ്മറപ്പടിയില്‍ വച്ച് ഹിരണ്യകശിപുതന്‍ കുടല്‍ പിളര്‍ന്ന്‍ രുധിരപാനം ചെയ്തു സംഹാരമൂര്‍ത്തിയാം ശ്രീനാരായണന്‍ ആ മഹത് വേളയില്‍ ഈരേഴു – പതിന്നാലുലോകങ്ങളും പരമാനന്ദം പൂണ്ടു , ദേവദുന്ദുഭികള്‍ മുഴങ്ങി, ദേവഗണങ്ങള്‍ ദേവാദിദേവനെ വാഴ്ത്തി, കൊട്ടും കുഴല്‍ വിളി നാദത്തോടെ അപ്സരകന്യമാര്‍ നൃത്തമാടി, നാരദവസിഷ്ടാദി താപസന്മാര്‍ നാരായണനാമം ജപിച്ചു, മാലോകര്‍ മുഴുവന്‍ ഭഗവാനെ സ്തുതിച്ചു.
- ഭൂമിയും ആകാശവും പാതാളവും വിഷ്ണുമായയില്‍ ആനന്ദലഹരിയിലായി…… എന്നാല്‍ അഗ്നിദേവനുമാത്രം ഇതത്ര സഹിച്ചില്ല, ആഘോഷങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നും വിട്ടുനിന്ന അദ്ദ്യേഹം ഹിരണ്യവധം ഒരു നിസാരകാര്യമാണെന്നും , ആര്‍ക്കും ചെയ്യാന്‍ കഴിയുന്നതാണെന്നും പറഞ്ഞ് മഹാവിഷ്ണുവിനെ വിമര്‍ശിച്ചു.
- ഇതില്‍ കുപിതനായ വിഷ്ണുഭഗവാന്‍ പാവകന്‍റെ അഹംഭാവം മാറ്റാന്‍ തീരുമാനിച്ച് , മാനംമുട്ടെ ഉയരത്തില്‍ ആളിക്കത്തുന്ന ഹോമകുണ്ഡത്തിലേക്ക് എടുത്തുചാടി, അഹങ്കാരിയാം അഗ്നിയെ കണക്കില്ലാതെ മര്‍ദിച്ചു.
- ഒടുവില്‍ കത്തിജ്ജ്വലിക്കുന്ന അഗ്നികുണ്ഡത്തെ വെറും ചാരമാക്കിമാറ്റി ലോകധിനാധനാം ജഗന്നാഥന്‍.
- ഭഗവാന്‍റെ ഈ സ്വരൂപമാണ് ഒറ്റക്കോലമായി കെട്ടിആരാധിക്കുന്നത്.
അഗ്നിയിലെക്ക് എടുത്ത് ചാടുന്ന ഈ തെയ്യം നരസിംഹമൂര്ത്തിയുടെ എല്ലാ രൌദ്ര ഭാവങ്ങളും നമുക്ക് കാണിച്ചു തരുന്നുണ്ട്. തെയ്യത്തിന്റെ വാമൊഴി കേട്ടു നോക്കൂ:
“ഇന്ധനം മലപോല്‍ കത്തിജ്വലിപ്പിച്ചതില്‍ നിര്ത്തി യിട്ടുണ്ടെന്‍
ഭക്തനാം പ്രഹ്ലാദനെ ദുഷ്ടനാം ഹിരണ്യകശിപു
അഗ്നിയില്‍ കുരുത്ത വൃക്ഷമാണല്ലോ വിഷ്ണുമൂര്ത്തി
അതിനു തിരുവാട്ടകേട് വന്നിരിക്കുന്നതായോരപരാധത്തിനു
ഇടവരുത്തരുതല്ലോ.. ആയതൊന്നു ഞാന്‍ പരീക്ഷിക്കട്ടെ..”
- തീച്ചാമുണ്ടിയുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടു നിരവധി ഐതിഹ്യങ്ങള്‍ പറഞ്ഞു കേള്ക്കുഅന്നു.
- ഹിരണ്യ വധം കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടും നരസിംഹമൂര്ത്തിയുടെ കോപം ശമിക്കാത്തതിനാല്‍ മഹാദേവന്‍ തന്റെ തൃക്കണ്ണ്‍ തുറന്ന്‍ അഗ്നിയുണ്ടാക്കിയെന്നും അതില്‍ ചാടി നരസിംഹം തന്റെ ദേഷ്യം ശമിപ്പിച്ചുവെന്നാണ് ഇതില്‍ ഒരു കഥ.
- മറ്റൊന്ന് ഹിരണ്യകശിപുവിനെ കൊന്ന് പ്രഹ്ലാദനെ രക്ഷിച്ച നരസിംഹ മൂര്ത്തി്യെയാണ് തീച്ചാമുണ്ടിയായി കെട്ടിയാടുന്നത്‌ എന്നതാണ്.
- നാരായണ നാമം ജപിച്ച പ്രഹ്ലാദനെ കൊല്ലാന്‍ ഹിരണ്യകശിപു പുത്രനെ അഗ്നിയില്‍ എറിഞ്ഞെന്നും തന്റെ ഭക്തനെ രക്ഷിക്കാന്‍ മഹാവിഷ്ണു അഗ്നിയിലെക്ക് ചാടിയതാണ് എന്നും അതാണ്‌ തീ ചാമുണ്ടിയിലൂടെ കാണിച്ചു തരുന്നതെന്നും ഒരു കഥ.
