Shravan 2023 Dates – Sawan Month in Traditional Hindu North Indian Calendar - Shravan Mahina 2023 Start

Shravan Month, or Sawan Mahina, is one of the holiest Hindu months and is dedicated to Lord Shiva in North India. Shravan Month 2023 starts on July 4 to August 31. There is an extra Shravan month or Adhik Shravan Mahina in 2023. This is from July 18 to August 16, 2023. The Shravan Month is the fifth month in a traditional Hindu lunar calendar followed in North India. This calendar is followed mainly in Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Haryana, Bihar and Chhattisgarh and other North Indian states. A month in these regions is calculated from the day after Purnima or full moon to the next Purnima. The year in the Hindi Calendar is Saka 2080.

Rituals - Fasting - Puja and Other Observances in Shravan Month

  • Non-vegetarian food is completely avoided.
  • People make it a point to visit Shiva temples on Sawan Mondays.
  • The Mondays or Somwar in Shravan month is dedicated to worship of Shiva. The Mondays in the month are on July 10, July 17, July 24, July 31, August 7, August 14, August 21 and August 28, 2023
  • Mangala Gouri Puja is observed on Tuesdays in Shravan Month.
  • Shravan Month is also the first month in the Chatur Maas - four holy months.

Nija or Shudh Shravan Mahina 2023 - Real Shravan Month 2023

Nija Shravan Mahina Or Real Shravan Month 2023 is from July 4 to July 17, 2023 and from August 17 to August 31, 2023

Shravan Month 2023 Krishna and Shukla Paksha

Shravan Month Krishna Paksha (waning phase of moon) is from July 4 to July 17
Shravan Month Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of moon) is from August 17 to August 31

Chaturthi Vrat or Sankashti Ganesh Chaturthi in Shravan Month 2023 is on July 6. The Chandrodaya or Moonrise time as per North Indian calendars is 9:43 PM.

Purnima is on August 31, 2023. The Purnima Vrat is marked on August 30.
The Purnima begins at 10:12 AM on August 30 and ends at 7:45 AM  on August 31

Adhik Sankashti Chaturthi monthly fasting dedicated to Lord Ganesh in Shravan Month is on August 4 – Moonrise or Chandrodaya is at 8:55 PM – Indian Standard Time.

Adhik Shravan Maas Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha

Shravan Mahina 2023 Shukla Paksha (Waxing phase of moon) is from July 18 to August 1. 
Shravan Maas 2023 Krishna Paksha (Waning phase of moon) is from August 2 to August 16.

Purnima in Adhik Marathi Shravan Maas

Shravan Purnima or Full moon day is on August 1, 2023.
The Purnima begins at 2:44 AM on August 1 and ends at 12:24 AM  on August 2.

Amavasya in Adhik Marathi Shravan Maas

Shravan Amavasya or No moon day is on August 16.
The Amavasi begins at 12:03 PM on August 15 and ends at 2:01 PM on August 16.
