Agni Bhairavan Theyyam – Story – Information

Agni Bhairavan Theyyam (അഗ്നിഭൈരവന്‍ തെയ്യം) is a rare theyyam performed during the annual theyyam – thira – kaliyattam festival in Kasaragod, Kannur and other regions in North Kerala. As per information, this theyyam is associated to Kapaladhari form of Shiva. The Agni Bhairavan theyyam story is that of Shiva nipping the fifth head of Brahma and thereby acquiring Brahmahatya Shapam – cursing of killing a Brahmin or knowledgeable person. This particular Agni Bhairavan theyyam uses fire to purify and to defeat demons. This theyyam is famous for it is unique display and ferociousness.

This theyyam is usually performed at around 2 AM at night. 


This theyyam is annually performed at Kasargod Chennakkott Baanam Ponnamparambath Vishnumurthy Devasthanam temple from February 17 to February 21.
