Alottu Bhagavathi theyyam (ആലോട്ട് ഭഗവതി തെയ്യം) is a rare and unique theyyam performed during the annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival in Kannur and Kasaragod regions of Kerala. As per information this is a ferocious form of Mother Goddess Bhagavathi and wears a strange mask. As per Alottu Bhagavathy theyyam story, the goddess appears and annihilates demons and evil doers but her ferociousness starts disturbing the life of normal people. She then appears in a tharavadu and here she is given a place to stay. A theyyam is performed annually to keep her calm and to seek her blessings.
Alottu Bhagavathi worshipped for protection of livestock,
peace, good health and prosperity. She is also worshipped for protection from enemies
and supernatural forces. It is believed that her blessings help in overcoming
various kinds of fear.
The theyyam is annually performed at the Kannur Kuttyattur Chathoth
Tharavadu Devasthanam temple on February 27 and February 28.
