Upavarsha

Upavarsha is the earliest commentary (vrittikara) on all sixteen chapters of the Purva Mimamsa Sutras of Jaimini and on all four chapters of the Brahma Sutras of Badarayana Vyasa. Upavarsha was an eminent exponent of both the Mimamsas. He was revered with an honorific title of ‘Bhagavan’ as quoted by Sabarasavamin in his bhashya of Mimamsa Sutra, as well as by Shankaracharya in his Devatadhikarana Bhasya of Brahmasutra, saying ‘iti Bhagavan Upavarshah’. According to Kathasaritsagara of Somadeva, he was the son of Shankarasvamin and a native of Pataliputra. It is said that he was the brother of Varsha, the guru of Panini, Vyadi, Vararuchi and Katyayana etc. The author is referred to many times by Sabarasvamin and Shankara in their Bhashyas. Acharya Ramanuja mentions in the beginning of his Sribhashya that his work is based on Bodhayana’s Vritti. Vedanta Desika, in his Tattvarthatika on Sri Bhashya, says that Bodhayana may be identical with Upavarsha. Devasvamin (1000 CE), who wr

Utsarga In Hinduism

In Hinduism, Utsarga is making a gift or donation or suspending a religious practice. The term utsarga in common parlance is associated with the practice of creating or making a garden for public welfare. Dharmashastra texts and Puranas include this pious act of purta (constructing wells, tanks, temples, shelters, divine edifices and gardens) in welfare. Since they benefit the people, they bring merit to the donor. Among the many texts on utsarga, Utsarga Mayukha (or Jalsayara motsarga) forming the eighth part of the voluminous treatise Bhagavanta Bhaskara by Nilakantha, deals exclusively with this topic. The term utsarga is also used to denote the suspension of Vedic study of one’s own school. Vedic study is revived after performing adhyanostsarjana (an expiatory rite) on the full moon day ruled by the asterism sravana, either in the month of Ashada (June –July) or in Shravana (July – August). The term is also used to denote vrisotsarga (letting free a bull) during the obsequies p

Vakya – Sentence In Hinduism

Vakya literally means a sentence in Hinduism. It is a string of words arranged in certain juxtaposition and competent to express a meaning. Any string of words, however, does not make a vakya. For instance, a string of words such as ‘king milk donkey cat drink’ is not a vakya. For a vakya to be meaningful, it must fulfill four conditions, namely, akanksha, yogyata, asatti and tatparya. Akanksha refers to the mutual expectancy of the constituent words of a sentence. Yogyata is concerned with the compatibility between words of a vakya. The sentence, ‘sprinkle with fire’ lacks yogyata, because the act of sprinkling is not compatible with fire. Asatti relates to the structural aspect of a vakya and means that in a vakya, there should be no unnecessary gaps or intervals between the words. Tatparya stands for the intended meaning of a sentence. According to the Naiyayikas, vakyartha (sentence meaning) is simply the synthesis of the meaning of the constituent words of a vakya. The individ

Unamasa in Hindu Calendars

Unamasa, also known as Kshayamasa, is a salient feature of Hindu lunar calendars. The Indian almanac considers periodic motions of both sun and the moon for determining the units of time. In order to correlate the two systems of time determination the practice of adhikmasa and kshayamasa is introduced. The event of the sun’s entry from one zodiac sign to another zodiac sign is known as Sankranti. Normally, only one Sankranti takes place in one lunar month. However, due to very fast speed of orbital motion (apparent) of the sun, sometimes two such transits of the sun occur in a single lunar month. That month is known as kshayamasa. As a result of such double transits of the sun in one lunar month, a month prior to it and a month after it are characterized by no solar transits at all. They are therefore the Adhikmasa. Therefore, the lunar month preceding the kshaya masa is known as samasarpa, while the one following the kshyamasa is called anhaspati. The kshyamasa is named as malamas

Do Not Focus On Imperfections

As a small streamlet flows along, it sometimes gets caught in the sands and cannot go further. It goes underground. In the same way, one’s life sometimes gets caught in the sands, and as it cannot go further it becomes a stagnant pool, giving out a bad smell; it is in an unhealthy condition. This is true in all fields of life. Much more so is it true in religious life and therefore we should be much more on guard. It is truer in religious life because in that life we strive after perfection, we aspire to reach perfection. When we aspire to reach perfection, naturally we shall see our imperfections more clearly. The person who does not strive for any ideal does not know what is right or wrong. If we have weaknesses, we should pray to God to overcome them. It is quite natural that we should fall at some time in life and have hundreds of failures. But failures may become the pillars of success, at least in religious life. Indeed, religious life means the grappling with failures; in
