Thampuranottu In Kerala Temples

Thampuranottu is a ritual observed in Hindu temples in Kerala. The ritual is usually performed in the Madan Kovils in South Kerala. Thampuran is the main deity in the temple.

The ritual includes Ganapati Stuti, Naga Stuti, Noorum Pallum offering to Nagas, Bhadrakali stuti and Poopada. Villadichchan pattu is also held as part of Thampuranottu.

Sapta Kanyakas of Thampuran are awakened by singing songs in the rituals. The sapta kanyakas are Kannan Thurkkanni, Nadukalilkanni, Uyirmindakanni, Padakkanachi, Velippozhikkani, Nattattinkkani and Ottapanthu Thozhi.

Next it is imagined that the Sapta Kanyakas has been sent to Kannyakumari in a chariot.

After this Ulakudaya Perumal, a friend of Thampuran, is awakened by singing songs. The music for the songs is provided by Nanthuni.

The Sapta Kanyakas are then brought back from Kannyakumari. Next, Ammanamadi Thananirtham Pattu ritual is performed before Thampuran.

After this the Ucchabali ritual is performed.

Next Ashtadikpalakas are seated (avahichiruthuka) on eight directions atop a peedam. Thampuran is seated in middle (avahichiruthuka). Kaniyan, who is the poojari, dances (thlulluka) wearing a palathoppi (hat made of arecanut leaf) and Chilambu and performs Ottu.

After this rituals like Avilum Malarum Balithuval, Kurti tharpanam, Pooppada viral and pongala naivedyam are held. After this to avoid evil eye (kannerudosham) for Ottu, a funny program known as Kamberu is performed. This concludes the Thampuarnottu ritual.
