Tvashta was the skilled craftsman of Devas. He was also the
guardian of the soma rasa, the celestial elixir. His story is associated the
powerful Demon Vritrasura.
Tvashta had made and sharpened the iron axe of Agni, he made
thunderbolts for indra and made the goblet from which the Devas drank amrita,
the nectar of immortality. He had also crafted the golden chariot of King
Prithu.
He married Rachana, an asura woman. The couple had a
powerful three-headed son named Vishvarupa, who was well versed in the Vedas.
When Indra and Brihaspati, the Guru of Devas, had a fight,
Vishvarupa was appointed as the Guru of Devas.
Vishvarupa was attached more towards Asuras and therefore he
covertly worked for the downfall of the Devas.
When Indra found out the treachery, he killed Vishvarupa.
Tvashta was enraged by the death of his son and summoned
demon Vritrasura to kill Indra.
