Chorakatti Bhagavathy Theyyam – Story – Information

Chorakatti Bhagavathy theyyam is a rare theyyam performed during the annual theyyam – thira – kaliyattam festival in Kannur region of Kerala. As per information, Chorakatti Bhagavathy is a ferocious form (Raudram Bhavam) of Goddess Kali and she was the youngest of seven sister goddesses. As per the story, once the seven sisters were traveling through the region. Chorakatti Bhagavathy felt thirst and she drank water from the first well she saw. But when she returned her sisters were not ready to take her along with them as she drank water from a well belonging to a low caste person.

Chorakatti Bhagavathy sat their disillusioned. During this time, a Namboothiri of Parolathu illam arrived there. The goddess climbed atop the traditional umbrella of the Namboothiri. She was given a spot in the family temple. But soon the family was besieged by numerous problems. The Goddess then told the family that she should stay here and should stay in the family of a low caste person. The ugra raudra murti was then transferred to Vellakudiyan tharavadu.

Chorakatti Bhagavathy Theyyam is performed at the Pattuvam Muthukuda Sree Bharanool Bhagavathy Kavu temple.

Chorakatti Bhagavathy theyyam blesses devotees with peace and prosperity. She is also believed to cure contagious diseases. She appears in a ferocious form to protect the wealth and life of her devotees. She is also propitiated to defeat enemies.
