Vettor Maha Vishnu Temple – Festivals – Karkidaka Vavu Bali

Vettor Maha Vishnu temple is located is located at Vettoor near Konni in Pathanamthitta district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Bhagavan Vishnu and is located on the banks of Achankovil River. The shrine is famous in the region for performing the annual Karkidaka Vavu Bali ritual and pitru tarpanam in the Karkidaka Masam (July – August). The temple has a chathura sreekovil, namaskara mandapam, upa devata shrines and chuttambalam. The most important day in the temple is Thursday. The temple observes various important rituals associated with Hindu temple in a calendar year including Vishu, Ramayana Masam, Niraputhari, Thiruvonam, Prathishta Dinam, Navratri with Vidyarambham, and Thrikarthika. Thousands of people participate in the Bali rituals in Karkidaka Masam in the temple. The festival is famous for various Vaishnava pujas and rituals. Kulasekharam Sankaranarayana Temple – Ancient Shrine – Vavu Bali

Kulasekharam Sankaranarayana temple is located at Thampuran Lane, Kulasekharam, in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The temple is dedicated to the combined form of Shiva and Vishnu. The shrine lies on the banks of Karamana River. The temple is famous in the region for performing Karkidaka Vavu Bali and Pitru Tarpanam rituals dedicated to dead forefathers in Karkidakam month (July – August). The temple has vatta sreekovil, nalambalam, namaskara mandapam, shrines of upa devatas, and kodimaram (flag pole). The temple holds its annual festival in February month and is not for ghosha yatra, caparisoned elephants, melam, traditional temple performing art forms and music. Both Vaishnava and Shaiva rituals and pujas are part of the festival. The shrine also observes Shivratri, Vishu, Ramayana Masam, Vau bali, various pujas and rituals in Chingam Masam, Thiruvonam, Mandala Makaravilakku kalam and Thrikarthika festival.

Kazhunadu Munnumukku Mudippura Devi Temple

Kazhunadu Munnumukku Mudippura Devi temple is located at Kazhunadu on Vazhayila – Kallayam Road near Vattappara in Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali. This is a small temple with a chathura sreekovil. There are no other structures. The temple observes various Tantric pujas and rituals especially certain unique rituals that are part of Mudippura temples in Thiruvananthapuram region.  Pongala ritual is held in the temple. Thottam pattu, special decoration using banana leaves, coconut fronts and homam are part of the annual festival held in April month. Ezhunnallathu, melam, traditional temple art forms and procession are part of the annual festival. A special covered temporary area is erected during the festival period for pujas and rituals.

Story Of King Mandhata Of Solar Dynasty In Hindu Religion

Mandhata was a king of the solar dynasty in Hindu religion and he was renowned for his piety, tolerance and devotion. Bhagavata Purana (Skanda IX, chapter 6.25-37) recounts an unusual legend about the birth of King Mandhata. His father, Yavanasva, had a hundred queens but no children. A group of sages performed a ritual for him in which water in a jar was made potent by the recitation of sacred mantras to be given to the queens to help conception. During the course of the ritual, on night, Yavanasva, became very thirsty and drank the consecrated water. To his horror, he became pregnant and after a ten-month period a child emerged from the right side of his pelvic region. The child was left in the forest, but was protected by the gods. For feeding it, Indra, the king of Devas, inserted his own finger (dripping with nectar) into its mouth, saying mamdhata (feed from me), which gave the child its name as Mandhata. Thricherpuram Sri Sankaranarayana temple is located at Padimon on Mallappally - Ezhumattoor Road near Vaipur in Pathanamthitta district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to the combined form of Shiva - Mahadeva and Vishnu. The shrine is famous for performing rituals for departed ancestors especially on Karkidaka Vavu Bali day in Karkidakam month. This is a small shrine but with an ancient murti. The main temple has a vatta sreekovil. There is another chathura sreekovil in the temple compound. There are no other structures in the compound except for the namaskara mandapam. The temple observes various important rituals associated with Hindu temple in a calendar year including Vishu, Ramayana Masam, Niraputhari, Ramayana Masam, Thrikarthika, Thiruvathira and Shivratri. Ashtami Rohini is observed with great enthusiasm in the temple.
