Story of Damrukeshar Mahadev form of Shiva in Ujjain
Demon Vajrasur conquered heaven and put a stop to all forms
of worship on earth. This created numerous problems for all the living beings
on earth. Devas were thrown out of heaven.
Devas, saints and humans assembled at a spot and offered
prayers to Mother Goddess. She appeared and fought against the demon. But the
demon used his Mayavi powers and confused the Goddess.
She took refuge in the Mahakaal Vana (present day Ujjain).
The demon followed her to Mahakaal Vana.
Sage Narada then informed about the situation to Lord Shiva.
An angry Shiva took the form of a fierce Bhairava and attacked the demon with
his Damaru or hourglass drum.
From the sound of Damaru a Shivling appeared. Soon fire
emitted from the Shivling. A huge fireball reduced Vajrasura into ashes. The
demon army also had a similar fate.
Devas, saints and humans who witnessed this divine event
named the Shivling as Damrukeshar Mahadev.
