Madayi Sree Puthiya Bhagavathi Kavu Temple – Theyyam Thira Kaliyattam Festival

Madayi Sree Puthiya Bhagavathi Kavu temple (Ittammal) is located on Naval Academy Road at Madayi in Kannur district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Puthiya Bhagavathy. The annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival is held for four days in Malayalam Kumbha Masam – Kumbham 16 to Kumbham 19 (February 28 to March 3).

Important theyyams that can be witnessed at Madayi Ettammal Sree Puthiya Bhagavathi Kavu temple are Veera Kali theyyam, Vayanattu Kulavan theyyam, Thee Chamundi or Ottakolam theyyam, Puthiya Bhagavathi theyyam, Gulikan theyyam, Vishnumoorthi theyyam and Veeran theyyam.

This is a small traditional Kerala style temple with a chathura sreekovil. The walls and roof of the sanctum are decorated with traditional temple motifs. There are no major structures. Other deities popularly worshipped in Kavu and temples in Kannur region are also worshipped in the temple in small sreekovils, under trees and atop raised square platforms, which are exposed to the elements.

The annual festival days are noted various unique pujas and rituals, melam, decoration, fireworks and traditional temple performing art forms.

Sankranti in every Malayalamasam and Vishu are important days in the temple.
