There is a Brahma temple located near the world famous Lingaraj temple in Bhubaneswar in Odisha. This unique small temple is surrounded on all sides by water. Usually, no deity is worshipped inside this temple. However, during the 42 days Chandan Yatra festival, this temple gains prominence, as the reflective deity of Bhagavan Lingaraja pays a visit here on boat.
The legends of Ekamra (Lingaraj Temple) tell a captivating
tale of Lord Brahma's connection to the coronation ceremony of Lingaraj in
Ekamra Kshetra. According to the lore, during the coronation ceremony where Lingaraj
was appointed as the soul of the universe, Lord Brahma graced the occasion.
However, when the locals requested Lord Brahma to stay in Ekamra permanently,
he couldn't agree to it. Instead, he made a divine promise to return every year
for the Rukuna Ratha Jatra (End of March or April) and serve as the charioteer for Lord Lingaraj.
In commemoration of Lord Brahma's annual visit, the Brahma Temple was constructed near the banks of Bindusagar. This temple stands as a testament to the divine connection between Lord Brahma and Ekamra Kshetra. The presence of Lord Brahma during the Rukuna Ratha Jatra symbolizes a sacred tradition, marking his commitment to participate in this grand event every year.
Interestingly, the temple located in the middle of
Bindusagar, known as Jagati, is often referred to as the Brahma Temple by the
locals. This nomenclature highlights the significance of Lord Brahma's promise
and his divine connection to Ekamra Kshetra. The temple serves as a focal point
for devotees who come to witness the annual Rukuna Ratha Jatra and seek the
blessings of both Lord Lingaraj and Lord Brahma.
The intertwining of these legends and the presence of the
Brahma Temple in Ekamra Kshetra contribute to the rich cultural and spiritual
tapestry of the region, drawing devotees and visitors alike to partake in the
divine festivities and experience the timeless connection between the earthly
realm and the divine.
