Maarikalachi Theyyam – Story – Information

Maarikalachi theyyam ( മാരികലച്ചി ) is a unique theyyam performed in Kannur region during the Karkidaka Masam (July – August). The theyyam visits homes especially in and around Maadayi Kavu during the peak monsoon season in Kerala – the Karkidaka Masam. As per information, this theyyam arrives to remove all kinds of bad omens and bad luck. As per Maarikalachi theyyam story, the natural calamities that follow heavy monsoon will be alleviated by the appearance of theyyam. The theyyam offers prayers and takes away with him all kinds of contagious diseases. It is believed that Kali and Kala both follow Maarikalachi theyyam who drops them in the sea. The theyyam first appear in Madayikavu on Karkidakam 16 (July 31 or August 1). Story of Bhrigasuran and Kuttichathan is part of Theyyam folk dance and folklore in North Kerala. Kuttichathanmar are the children of Goddess Parvati and Shiva. The divine couple blessed their children with immense magical powers. Two Kuttichathans – Vishnumaya Kuttichathan and Karikutti chathan – were given by Goddess Parvati to a woman named Koolivaka. She looked after the two like her own children. Once a demon named Bhrigasuran was enamored by the beauty of Koolivaka and decided to forcibly marry her. This demon was so powerful as he was blessed with the knowledge of using the most powerful Brahmastra. Bhrigasuran and his army were stopped by Vishnumaya Kuttichathan and Karikutti chathan. The little finger of Vishnumaya Kuttichathan got hurt in the battle and a drop of blood fell on earth. From this one drop appeared 400 Kuttichathanmar. Maarana Gulikan theyyam is a rare theyyam performed during the theyyam – kaliyattam – thira festival in Kannur and Kasaragod districts of Kerala. As per information, Marana Gulikan is one among the eight Gulikan theyyams performed in the tharavadu, kavu and temples in North Kerala. The story of Maarana Gulikan theyyam is associated with Shiva annihilating Yama, the god of death, to protect Saint Markandeshwara, the ardent devotee of Shiva.
