The popular belief is that Mata was born to a childless couple in South India after several years of penance. Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued Rupees 5 coins bearing the images of Mata Vaishno Devi to mark the 25th anniversary of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. The back side of the coin bears in the center a picture of Vaishno Devi, with the inscription ‘Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board’ in Devnagri along the upper arc and in English along the lower arc. This is perhaps the first time that Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued a coin bearing the image of a Hindu deity.
