Epistemology In Yoga

True knowledge is called prama. The means to decide that a piece of knowledge is true is called pramana. Patanjali has recognized three pramanas, namely, sense experience, inference and testimony (1.7) The process of knowledge is often hampered by inadequacy of external conditions of light or by defects of the cognitive senses such as jaundiced eyes, myopia and many others. The faculty which gains knowledge is called intellect. It always works on the basis of previous experience stored in buddhi and it makes use of three pramanas to gain true knowledge. But sometimes, due to various reasons, the intellect fails to yield true knowledge. True knowledge is called tadrupa-pratishta, i.e. in accordance with what is. What it is not so, it is called viparyaya. It is false knowledge which is not based on what is. Viparyaya can be removed and true knowledge gained by the removal of obstacles. However, one obstacle that always remains is the presence of the afflictions in the mind. Prajna is n...

Who Is Yati In Hinduism? – Ascetic

In Hinduism, Yati is an ascetic. The Sanskrit word ‘yati’ has the following meanings according to context – an ascetic who has renounced the world and controlled his passions; a pause in music; a cesura in prosody; a symbol for the number seven; and a widow. In Dharmashastra, this is a technical word indicative of yati-ashrama (unique lifestyle). This is the final stage of social life. The word is found in Vedic lore, indicating high merit achievable by severe penance. It is distinguished from various stages of progress and achievement like those of rishi and muni. In Hindu social context, a yati is highly respected: he is believed to have powers to pronounce curses or boons. Though we have references to women mendicants, this order was not very well appreciated in the medieval and modern traditional circles. In Santana Dharma (Hinduism), only men take to this order of life. Such yatis are also considered torchbearers of unbroken religious, mystic, and tantric paramparas (philoso...

The Perfect Soul Does Not Desire Worldly Honors – Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

The spiritual aspirant is absorbed in his spiritual experiments and experiences, and the journey continues. One already has the experience of the world through his senses, hence he tries, as far as possible, to depend only on himself, he tries to gauge the extent to which he can go with the minimum of help from others and eschews the use of many things in the world. In due course, the aspirant is sure to win peace; nothing is wanting, he has enough and to spare. He is satisfied and his behavior reveals it. He expects nothing from those with whom he deals. Is expecting material returns from others any different from begging? If it is true that he has attained to happiness beyond the reach of ordinary mortals, why should he expect a beggarly share from material gains? If he has in his possession the blissful spring of eternal life, why should he ask a price from his dealings with others? It is impossible that one who has realized his Self should rely on others; on the contrary, he feeds ...

Actual Cognition In Hinduism – Yatharthajnana

Yatharthajnana is a term in Hindu logic meaning ‘actual cognition’. It is also known as prama in Hinduism. This compound word yatharthajnana consists of three words – yatha ‘as’; artha ‘meaning’ as object of knowledge; and jnana ‘perception’. Yathartha means artham anatikramya (‘undeviated from the meaning’). The word jnana is formed out of the root jna – ‘to know’. ‘Actual cognition’ only happens when such a perception of an object does not differ from the original. For example, suppose a man sees a silver coin from a distance and cognizes that object as a silver coin, then that cognition is ‘actual cognition’; if another sees an oyster’s shell from quite a distance and cognizes that shell as silver, then that cognition is false and is called a fallacy. The technical derivation for yatharthajnana is tadvati tatprakarakam jnanam (the cognition of something in the right manner). Its opposite is ayatharthajnana or aprama defined as tadabhavavati tatprakarakam jnanam (the cognition of som...

One Goddess Lakshmi and Narayana were sitting in Vaikuntha, and Ananta and Jagannatha visited them. Jagannatha assumed the form of a sakhi (female associate) and attracted the attention of the Divine Couple. Not to be outwitted, Ananta assumed the form of Padmana (Pradyumna), infant son of Goddess Lakshmi. For a time the ruse succeeded, and he was caressed by the deities, who thought him to be the child Pradyumna. Later, they gave him the appellation of Shishu.
