Paramba Sripuram Sri Krishna Temple – Festival

Paramba Sripuram Sri Krishna temple is located at Paramba in Kasargod district, Kerala. The annual pratishta festival in the temple is held in Meda masam. The shrine is dedicated to Sri Krishna bhagavan. This is a small shrine with a chuttambalam and chathura sreekovil. The annual Vishu festival is of great importance in the temple. Special pujas and rituals including a beautiful Vishu Kani is organized in the temple on the occasion. Sri Krishna Jayanti is another important festival in the temple.

Lakkidi Thekkumangalam Cherngottu Kavu – Vishu Vela Festival

Lakkidi Thekkumangalam Cherngottu Kavu temple is located at Thekkumangalam near Lakkidi in Palakkad district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathi. The annual Vishu Vela festival ( തെക്കുംമംഗലം ചേര് ‍ ങ്ങോട്ട് കാവില് ‍ വെള്ളിയാഴ്ച വിഷു വേല) is the most important festival in the temple. Parayeduppu, Usha puja, Eedu, Palakkombu kondu viral, thayambaka, keli pattu, melam and ezhunellippu, nadaswaram, and mudiyettu are some of the important festivities and rituals are part of the festival. Thiruvathira, caparisoned elephants, thalam and traditional temple art forms are also part of the annual festival.

Veliyathunad Tantra Vidya Peedham Narasimha Swamy Temple – Festival

Veliyathunad Tantra Vidya Peedham Narasimha Swamy temple is located at Veliyathunadu in Ernakulam district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Narasimha Avatar of Bhagwan Vishnu. The annual festival in the temple is held in Meda Masam (April – May) and the festival begins with kodiyettam and concludes with the arattu ceremony. This is a traditional Kerala style temple with a nalambalam, namaskara mandapam, vatta sreekovil and shrines of upa devatas. The temple has a two tier sanctum sanctorum. The annual festival is famous for various Vaishnava pujas and rituals including homam, abhishekam etc. Temple art forms, melam, ezhunnallathu and procession are part of the annual festival. Narasimha Jayanti and Thiruvonam are important days in the temple.

Kalavoor Kattoor Hanuman Temple – Hanuman Jayanti Festival

Kalavoor Kattoor Hanuman temple, also known as Puthiyaveettil Sree Hanumal Kshetram, is located at Kalavoor in Alappuzha district, Kerala. The temple is dedicated to Anjaneya or Hanuman. The annual Hanuman Jayanti is an important festival in the temple. Kalavoor Kattoor Hanuman temple festival 2024 date is April 23. This is a west facing temple. Nattakom Ponkunnathukavu Bhagavathi Temple – Vishu Festival

Nattakom Ponkunnathukavu Bhagavathi temple is located at Nattakom in Kottayam district, Kerala. The annual festival in the temple with kodiyettam on Vishu day (April 14 or April 15) in Meda Masam (April – May). The 10-day festival concludes on Pathamudayam day (April 23). The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy. The temple has a kodimaram, chathura sreekovil, namaskara mandapam and shrines of upa devatas. The annual festival in the temple is famous for ezhunnallathu, melam, panchavadyam, procession and traditional performing art forms of Kerala temples. The temple observes various Tantric pujas and rituals including abhishekam, homam etc. Navratri, Thrikarthika and other annual Devi pujas and rituals are observed in the shrine.

Protecting the Self Through Renunciation

The first mantra of the Isha Upanishad beautifully enlightens us in this line – protecting the self through renunciation. After instructing the aspirant to ‘envelop everything sentient and insentient with God’, the Upanishad reiterates, ‘protect the Self through that renunciation’. This appears to be a highly paradoxical statement to a layperson, for, the question immediately crops up: ‘How can one protect the Self and renounce simultaneously?’ Acharya Shankara clarified this riddle in his commentary on this mantra. He said: ‘It means through detachment (and not abandonment); for, a son or a servant, when abandoned or dead, does not protect one since they have no connection with oneself ’. The Self, the Atman, has to be nourished and protected at the cost of all other worldly enjoyments.
