Doas anybody know, which date is right to celebrate Janmashtami in Europe? Or is it proper to use one of the dates either between August 09th and 10th or September 8th?
Hi anonymous ^, honestly it depends on which sampradaya (lineage/tradition) you wish to follow. Personally I am a Singaporean Indian of Tamil-Indian descent. The south indian sri vaishnava and vaikhanasa temples here (the ones i regularly go to) are observing janmashtami on the latter date (8 Sept) while the Iskcon and Hare Krsna temple and groups are observing it on August 10. I intend to carry out the puja and vrat at home on sept 8 and join in the festivities at the mandir on august 10. Ultimately, i think its really up top you, though you may want to perhaps follow the date being followed by your local temple. I'm not too sure about the appropriateness of using any date in between, since the criteria for celebrating janmasthami may not be met(ashtami tithi, rohini nakshatra etc.) But really i think, either date should be fine.Bhagavan does say in the Gita "patram pushpam phalam toyam, yo me bhaktya prayachati tad aham bakti upartham asnami prayatatmanah" so i feel that whichever date you choose to celebrate lord krsna's appearance on, so long as there is bhakti, lord krishna will accept your devotion
well said ... hare krishna
