Aduthila Theru Bhagavathi Temple – Theyyam Kaliyattam Festival

Aduthila Theru Bhagavathi temple is located at Aduthila near Payangadi in Kannur district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathi and other popular deities that are commonly worshipped in sacred places in the region. The annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival at Aduthila Theru Bhagavathi temple is held for two days in Malayalam Kumbha Masam – Kumbham 15 and Kumbham 16 (February 27 and Feb 28).


The main deity is worshipped in a chathura sreekovil (square sanctum sanctorum) which has a traditionally decorated roof. There are other small sreekovils and square platforms for other deities. Some deities are worshipped under trees. Sankranti is the most important day in the temple. Vishu in Medam 1 is an important festival here.

The important theyyams that can be witnessed at Aduthila Theru Bhagavathi temple are Chooliyar Bhagavathy, Gulikan Theyyam, Moovalamkuzhi Chamundi, Oorpazhassi theyyam, Padarkulangara Bhagavathy theyyam, Vettaikkorumakan theyyam, Vishnumoorthi theyyam and Thai Paradevatha theyyam.

Poorakkali (Pooram) is celebrated on Karthika nakshatram in the Malayalam month of Meenam (March-April)
