Valiyannur Kanakacheri Kurumba Temple – Theyyam – Kaliyattam Festival

Kanakacheri Kurumba temple is located on the Vatappoyil – Chappa road near Valiyannur in Kannur district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Kurumba and other popular deities worshipped in kavu and tharavadu in the region. The annual kaliyattam theyyam thira festival is held in the shrine for two days in Malayalam Kumbha Masam – Kumbham 24 to Kumbham 25 (March 8 to March 9).

This is a beautiful small shrine with a couple of Chatura sreekovil (s) – square sanctum sanctorum. The roofs of the sanctums are traditionally decorated with religious motifs. There is separate designated square raised platforms for other deities. Some deities are worshipped under trees. Sankranti is an important day in a Malayalam month here. Vishu in April is of great significance here.

The important theyyams that can be witnessed at Valiyannur Kanakacheri Kurumba temple are Vasoorimala theyyam, Gulikan theyyam and Khandakarnan theyyam.
