Karuvalli Sree Kurumba Bhagavathi Kavu – Theyyam Kaliyattam Festival

Karuvalli Sree Kurumba Bhagavathi Kavu temple is located at Thana off Edapally - Panvel Highway, Elayavoor in Kannur, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Kurumba Bhagavathi. The annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival is held for four days in Malayalam Kumbha Masam – Kumbham 21 to Kumbham 24 (March 5 to March 8).


There are twin shrines in the compound with square sanctum sanctorum – chathura sreekovil. The roof the shrines are decorated with traditional Kerala temple motifs. Some deities are worshipped on raised square platforms which are exposed to sun and rain. Some deities are worshipped under tree. Sankranti in a Malayalam masam is of great importance here. Vishu is another important festival.

The important theyyams that can be witnessed at Karuvalli Sree Kurumba Bhagavathi Kavu temple are Bhadrakali theyyam, Thamburatti Amma, Gulikan theyyam, Khandakarnan theyyam, Nagakanya theyyam, Thee Chamundi or Ottakolam, Kutti Sasthappan theyyam, Vasoorimala theyyam, Veera Kali Theyyam, Veeran theyyam and Puthiya Bhagavathi theyyam.
