Diwali and New Year 2024

Diwali marks the end of a lunar year in traditional Hindu calendar followed in Gujarat. New Year begins on the day after Diwali. In 2024, Diwali is on October 31 and Gujarati New Year is on November 2. Vikram Samvat 2081 begins on the day. Diwali and New Year is considered the most auspicious period in an year especially for business community.


The Hindu calendar followed in Gujarat is also known as Vikram Calendar, or Vikram Samvat, and a month is calculated from the day after no moon or Amavasya to next Amavasya. The first month in a Gujarati Calendar is the Kartik month.

Certain business communities begin the new financial year from the day. They open new account books on the day.

In the Hindu calendar popularly used in North India the year begins with Chaitra Shukla Pratipada (March – April). In this calendar also, the current year is 2081.
