Vasubaras In Maharashtra During Diwali

Vasubaras is the first day of Diwali celebrations in Maharashtra. It is observed on the 12th day of the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of moon) of Ashwin month as per traditional Marathi calendar. Vasubaras 2024 date is October 28. Vasubaras is dedicated to the worship of the cow.



Women worship cows with a calf on the day. Symbolically, the cow represents motherhood.

In rural India, for thousands of families cow is the sole economic source. Keeping this in mind married women offer special pujas for the well being of cows.

In some communities, married women undertake a fast partaking of only one meal, and either in the morning or evening. In the morning and evening cow is worshiped. Special delicacies are given to cow on the day.
