Is there aparallel epic in Sri Lanka
akin to ramayan in India,narrating
the sequence of events from King
Ravban's angle?
Sometimes I feel that King Ravan,a staunch
Shiva devotee,Musical maestro and a King
of an independent isle kingdom would have gone
on a usual aerial sortie in his pushpak viman and finfing an young girl in distress and alone
in a forest area and unable to converse due to
language disparity just rescued her and took her to
his kingsom and lodged her safe in the company of loyal maids. He has not taken her to his harem or misbehaved with her in any way.
Number two: Are Vanaras,Vali Sugriva etc. described
as monkeys really aboriginals of Southm that
a north Indian poet Valmiki described as monkeys!
Were thereever talking monkeys!
I awit with interest reply to my comments, one of Sep 2010
and the other Oct 2010
There is no known parallel Ramayana in Lanka that narrates the story from the angle of Ravan. But there is a story in vogue that Sita was daughter of Ravana whom he had abandoned as it was predicted that she will cause his death.
This child was later brought by Janaka as Sita.
How can there not be a parallel to Ramayan
in Sri Lanka.
Ravan was equally a great King
KIng Ravan, a strong devotee of Lord Shiva,
a musical maestro and a King of an island
nation.
Could he have abducted Sita said to be his
daughter?
Does not the basis of Ramayan fall!
still await answer to my query on this
epic.
As a Sri lankan I am aware of some of the legends that are more popular now regarding Ravana. Let me be very brief. You can do more research on the net.
Ravana is known in Sri Lanka as a great king. about 90% of his stories are regarding the Ramayana. I am unable to clarify the source of these legends. There is a good chance that all these legends came up after the awareness of the epic Ramayana by Valmiki. There are many places in Sri Lanka that are related to Ramayana (pls search "ramayana trail"). However there is legend about "Bali" and "Tharu" who are ancestors of Ravana who were known to be rulers of the world. I have no information to clarify the origin or the period of these legends. In Sri lanka there is a disorganised movement who is trying to say We are one of the greatest civilizations on earth. They refer to Ravana and his ancestors to seek glory in. A good chance is that all these legends were created over time by similar minded people.
