The success of 'Nyapasur Badh', a comedy sketch by legendary actor Jahar Ray, in which Mahishasura was adorned by a live actor, planted the idea of Durga idols with a live model in people's minds. Gradually, the concept became a reality. From the late nineties into the first decade of this millennium, 'Jyantha Durga' (Live Durga) became widespread in small towns and villages in Bengal.
Durga with her family, accompanied by live models, would be
placed in the pandal, drawing massive crowds. Many artists earned extra income
during the Puja days by applying makeup and dressing up. Puja organizers would
actively call people using a microphone, announcing, "This year's special
attraction is Jyantha Durga with live models..."
