Mattool Sree Kurumba Bhagavathi Temple – Theyyam Thira Kaliyattam Festival

Mattool Sree Kurumba Bhagavathi temple is located at Mattool in Kannur district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Koorumba Bhagavathi and other deities that are worshipped in kavu, sacred places and temples in the region. The annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival is held for four days in Malayalam Kumbha Masam – Kumbham 10 to Kumbham 13 (February 23 to Feb 26).


Important theyyams that can be witnessed at Mattool Sree Kurumba Bhagavathi temple are Muttil Chamundi theyyam, Gulikan theyyam, Nagakanya theyyam, Puthiya Bhagavathi theyyam, Veerakali theyyam, Veeran theyyyam, Vishnumoorthi theyyam

This is a small shrine with a chathura sreekovil for the main deity. The roof of the shrine is traditionally decorated. There are other smaller sreekovils and raised platforms for other deities. Certain deities are worshipped under trees. Sankranti in a Malayalam month is of great importance.
