Kandoth Sree Koormba Bhagavathy Temple – Theyyam Thira Kaliyattam Festival

Sree Koormba Bhagavathy Temple also known as Kandoth Ara is situated at Kandoth around 3 km from Payyanur Town in Kannur district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Kurumba Bhagavathi, Chamundi, Vishnumoorthi, Puli Daivangal and the very rare Pulikeezhil Daivam (Shiva). The annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival is held for four days in Malayalam Dhanu Masam – Dhanu 25 to Dhanu 28 (January 10 to January 13).

പുലി ദൈവങ്ങൾ, കരിന്തിരി നായർ, പുതിയ ഭഗവതി രക്തചാമുണ്ഡി, മടയിൽ ചാമുണ്ഡി, വിഷ്ണുമൂർത്തി, കുണ്ടോർ ചാമുണ്ഡി, കളരി മൂർത്തികൾ എന്നീ ആരാധനാ മൂർത്തികൾക്കു പുറമെ മറ്റ് തെയ്യക്കാവുകളിൽ കാണാത്ത പരമേശ്വരരൂപയായ പൂലിൻകീഴിൽ ദൈവം ഇവിടുത്തെ പ്രധാന ആരാധന മൂർത്തിയാണ്.

The important theyyams that can be witnessed at Kandoth Sree Koormba Bhagavathy temple are Madayil Chamundi, Marapuli theyyam, Karinthiri Nair theyyam, Kala Puli theyyam, Kundor Chamundi theyyam, Puthiya Bhagavathi, Raktha Chamundi, Vishnumoorthi and Pulikeezhil Daivam.

The temple has chathura sreekovil for the main deities – square sanctum sanctorums. The roofs and walls of the shrines are decorated with traditional temple motifs. There are other smaller sreekovils for other deities. Some deities are worshipped under trees and atop raised-square platforms. Sankranti every month is of great importance here.
