Thayyil Sree Vayanattu Kulavan Temple – Theyyam Thira Kaliyattam Festival

Thayyil Sree Vayanattu Kulavan temple is located at Kuruva in Kannur District, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Vayanattu Kulavan and other related deities. The annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival is held for three days in Malayalam Dhanu Masam – first Friday, Saturday and Sunday in January.

The temple has a square sanctum sanctorum (chathura sreekovil) for the main deity. The roof and walls are decorated with traditional motifs. The other deities are worshipped in small sanctums, atop uncovered small raised platforms and under trees. Sankranti (which falls in the middle of English month) in every month as per Malayalam calendar is of great importance here. The shrine is only open on Friday.

As per the temple, a great scholar and elder member of the family Guru Karanavar happened to visit a place associated with Vayanattu Kulavan. When he returned back to his home, Vayanattu Kulavan came along with him atop his traditional umbrella. Upon arriving at his tharavadu, he put the umbrella down but no one could remove it from the spot again. Astrologers soon found the presence of Vayanattu Kulavan and a temple was built for the deity.

The important theyyams that can be witnessed at Thayyil Sree Vayanattu Kulavan temple are Gurukarnavar theyyam, Illyidathu Bhagavathy theyyam, Puliyoor Kannan theyyam, Thekkan Gulikan theyyam and Vayanattu Kulavan theyyam.
