Alavil Puthiyakavu Mariyamman Kovil Temple – Theyyam Thira Kaliyattam Festival

Alavil Puthiyakavu Mariyamman Kovil temple is located on the Kannur – Alavil – Valapattanam Road in Kannur district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Mariamman. The annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival is held for three days in Malayalam Makara Masam – Makaram 14 to Makaram 16 (January 28 to January 30).


The important theyyams that are witnessed at Alavil Puthiyakavu Mariyamman Kovil temple are Veeran theyyam, Bhadrakali theyyam, Puthiya Bhagavathi theyyam, Sasthappan theyyam, Thekkan Gulikan and Veera Kali theyyam.

This is a small shrine with a square sanctum sanctorum (chathura sreekovil) for the main deities. The roof and walls are traditionally decorated. Other deities are worshipped in smaller chathura sreekovil. Some deities are worshiped atop raised square platforms. Certain deities are worshiped under trees. Sankranti in every Malayalam month is of significance here. Vishu festival is of importance here.
