Kuruli Kavu Temple – Theyyam Kaliyattam Festival - പന്തം പാച്ചിൽ

Kuruli Kavu Temple (കുറൂളിക്കാവു ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രം) is located at Kadavathur in Kannur district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy (Kooruli Amma). The temple is famous for a ritual known as Pantham Pachil. The annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival is held in the shrine for two days in Malayalam Kumbha Masam – Kumbham 8 and Kumbham 9 (February 20 and February 21).

This beautiful but small shrine is located on the banks of Mayyazhi River.



The main deity is worshipped in a chathura sreekovil – square sanctum sanctorum – which has a traditionally decorated roof and walls with religious motifs. Certain deities are worshipped on square platforms and under trees. Some deities have small sreekovil (s). Vishu is an important festival here. Sankranti in every Malayalam month is of great significance.

The important theyyams that can be worshipped at Kuruli Kavu Temple are Bappooran Theyyam, Bhairavan Theyyam, Kandakarnan theyyam, Naga Bhagavathi theyyam, Kuttichathan theyyam and Vasoorimala theyyam.
