Sree Nidungottum Kavu Bhagavathi Temple – Kaliyattam Theyyam Festival

Sree Nidungottum Kavu Bhagavathi temple is located at Vaadiyil Peedika, Chonadam near Thalassery in Kannur district, Kerala. This is an important Goddess Bhagavathi temple in the area. The Thirumudi or head gear of Bhagavathi taken out during the annual theyyam kaliyattam festival is one of the tallest in the region. The annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival in the temple is held for three days in Meda Masam – April 14 to April 16 (Medam 1 to Medam 3).


The temple compound has a couple of Chathura sreekovil – square sanctum sanctorum dedicated to various deities. Some deities are worshipped under trees and on specially dedicated square platforms.

The annual theyyam festival at Sree Nidungottum Kavu Bhagavathi temple is famous for various unique theyyam kolams. They theyyams performed here are Manthana Pothi, Cheriya Bhagavathy, Kandakarnan, Kuttichathan, Thekkan Gulikan, Pakka theyyam, Valiya Thamburatti, Vasoorimala, Vettakkorumakan and Vishnumoorthi theyyam.

There is a melekkaavu and thaazhe kavu here. The first day of every Malayalam month is of great significance in the temple.
