Panguni Uthiram 2026 Date – Importance Of Panguni Uthiram In Tamil Nadu Temples

Panguni Uthiram is an important Tamil festival observed in the Tamil month of Panguni (March – April). Panguni Uthiram 2026 date is April 1. Panguni Uthiram celebrates the wedding of important deities in the Hindu religion. The religious importance of the day is that the Uthiram Nakshatra (star) coincides with the full moon day (Poornima, or Purnima). The day is of great significance in majority of Hindu Temples in Tamil Nadu.

Divine Weddings on Panguni Uthiram

Hindu Scriptures like the Puranas and the two epics – Mahabharat and Ramayan – indicate that the auspicious day of Poornima and Uthiram star coinciding in the month of Panguni (March – April) is the day when most divine weddings had taken place.

Importance Of Panguni Uthiram in Tamil Nadu Temples

It is widely believed that Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvathi on this day in this region. Another legend indicates that Lord Muruga married Devasena on the day. It is also believed that Lord Rama married Sita on this day.

Another important wedding that took place on Panguni Uthiram is the one between Andal and Sri Ranganatha (Lord Vishnu). This is known as Panguni Uthiram Thirukalyanam and is an important event in Srivilliputtur and neighboring areas.

Festival and Auspicious Day in Many Temples

Panguni Uthiram is the only one day in the year when we see the Goddess Ranganayaki with Srirangam Lord Ranganatha on the same stage. Lord Vishnu and Goddess Ranganayaki meet in the Panguni Uttara mandapam and this is known as the Panguni Uthiram Serththi (togetherness).


The day is also of great importance in all most all important Lord Vishnu, Shiva and Muruga temples in Tamil Nadu including the Thirupadagam Kanchipuram and the Srirangam Sri Ranganatha Temple. Panguni Uthiram is a 10-day festival at the Palani Murugan Temple and is also the most important festival held here.

Devotees visiting various Murugan Temples on the day carry Kavadis.

Numerous temples in Tamil Nadu observe festivals during this period. The day is also of great importance at the Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple in Kerala. Special pujas and rituals are held on the day.

Panguni Uthiram Rituals in Tamil Nadu Temples

  • At the Tiruchendur Sri Subramanya Swami Temple, Sri Valli Thirukalyanam is celebrated on the night of Panguni Uthiram with great devotion.

  • In the Palani Murugan Temple, the ten-day Thiruvizha begins with Kodiyetram. On the sacred day of Panguni Uthiram, the grand Therottam (Temple Car Festival) takes place. The Thirukalyanam is held on the previous day

  • The Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple hosts the eleven-day Adhi Brahmotsavam during the month of Panguni. On Panguni Uthiram, Thayar Thirunakshatram Serthi Sevai is observed with special rituals.

  • At the Sri Arunachaleswarar Temple, two Thirukalyanams are performed on Panguni Uthiram — the first for the Moolavar during the forenoon/noon, and the second for the Urchavar around 11:00 pm.

  • At the Sri Ekambareswarar Temple, the divine wedding of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati (Thirukalyanam) is conducted at 4:00 am on Panguni Uthiram. 

  • In Srivilliputhur Andal Temple, the celestial wedding of Sri Andal (Kothai) and Sri Rangamannar is celebrated on Panguni Uthiram.

  • At the Sri Kapaleeshwarar Temple, the ten-day Panguni festival concludes on Pournami with Sri Kabali–Karpagambal Thirukalyanam.

  • The Sri Thyagaraja Swami Temple celebrates Panguni Peruvizha, where the grand Aazhi Therottam is held on Ayilyam Nakshatram and Theerthavari takes place on Panguni Uthiram.

  • In Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple, a seventeen-day Thiruvizha is conducted during Panguni. Sri Subramanya–Deivanai Thirukalyanam, Pattabhishekam, and other important rituals are performed.

  • At the Vadapalani Murugan Temple, a three-day Theppotsavam (Float Festival) begins on Panguni Uthiram.

Devotional Observances on Panguni Uthiram

  • Devotees perform special pujas to their Kula Deivam and visit temples for darshan on this auspicious day.

  • Many observe fasting and undertake Kavadi, Paal Kudam, and Padayatra to Lord Murugan temples.

  • Temples resonate with devotional hymns, rhythmic percussion, and sacred chants.

  • Special Homams and elaborate rituals are conducted across Tamil Nadu to mark the spiritual significance of Panguni Uthiram.
