Kunnanangad Gurikkalot Bhagavathy Temple – Theyyam Kaliyattam Festival

Kunnanangad Gurikkalot Bhagavathy temple is located at Kunnanangad in Kannur district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy or Devi. The annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival is held of three days in Malayalam Kumbha Masam (Kumbham 26 to 28) – March 10 to March 12.


There are several small chathura sreekovils in the temple compound. The roofs of the sanctum sanctorum are traditionally decorated with various motifs. The whole temple is set against the backdrop of a grove or kavu. Some deities are worshipped on raised square platforms and under trees. Sankranti is the most important day in the shrine.

The important theyyams that can be witnessed at Kunnanangad Gurikkalot Bhagavathy temple are Bali theyyam, Dharma Daivam, Kannikoru Makan theyyam, Thaiparadevatha theyyam, Vishnumoorthi theyyam, Gulikan theyyam, Dhooliyanga Bhagavathy theyyam and Ilamkolam theyyam.
