Karuvacheri Kuttyattu Sree Thondachan Devasthanam Temple – Theyyam – Kaliyattam Festival – Maladaiva Theyyam Kolangal

Karuvacheri Kuttyattu Sree Thondachan Devasthanam temple is located at Karuvacheri near Payyannur in Kannur district, Kerala. This one of the rare temples in which one can witness rare Maladaiva Theyyam Kolangal. The annual theyyam festival is held here for three days in Malayalam Meda Masam – Medam 6, Medam 7 and Medam 8 (April 19 to April 21).

This a small shrine with a chathura sreekovil and numerous other smaller sanctums. Some deities are worshipped on raised platform and also under trees. Sankranti and Vishu are two important dates in the temple.

The annual festival begins with Ganapathi homam, this is followed by Prathishtana Adiyanthiram, Ariyum Thiriyum konduvaral from Vellora Sri Someshwari temple and ethirellppu.

The important theyyams that are performed in the temple are Dharma Daivam purappadu, Vishnumoorthi thoottam, Thondachan Daivam purappadu, Koyithalathu Karichamundi purappadu, Attancheri Gulikan, Kottilettumkoottam Mantra Moorthi, Maladaiva Thaiya Kolangal (Malaveeran, Malaveerathi, Pottan, Gulikan, Kurathi, Kumberamoorthi and Bhagavathi.

The rare Maladaiva theyyam kolangal are performed on the final day on April 21.
