Veerabhadran Theyyam – Story – Information

Veerabhadran theyyam kolam is a unique theyyam seen during the annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival in Kannur and Kasaragod regions of Kerala. As per information, this is a ferocious male theyyam. As per Veerabhadran theyyam story, upon hearing the news about the death of Goddess Sati in Daksha Yajna, Shiva, her husband, became furious and pulled out a hair strand and threw it on the ground. From it appeared Veerabhadra. He along with Goddess Kali and millions of Shiva Ganas attacked Daksha yajna and burned everything to the ground. He later chopped off the head of Daksha. After the battle, Shiva asked Veerabhadra to go to earth and join Kshetrapalaka and Vettaikorumakan in their war against unjust rulers. He helped in defeating Envazhi Prabhukal and helped in restoring the Alladam Swaroopam to the Kolathiri king.

The theyyam holds a sword and shield. The theyyam tries to attack the people witnessing the event. There is a belief that if the theyyam touches a person with his shield then that person will not live to see the theyyam in next year. So people try to avoid getting touched by the shield of the theyyam.

Veerabhadran theyyam is performed at Pilicode Rayaramangalam Bhagavathy Kavu in Kasaragod, Kasaragod Sree Kottikulam Puthrakkar Tharavadu Devasthanam temple, Annur Sree Anthimahakali (nageniyamma) Kottam temple, Pilicode Sree Vengakkot Bhagavathi Temple and Kannur Mathamangalam Thalavil Perumbadamb Paradevatha Veera Bhadra Swami temple.
