Thoovakali Theyyam – Story – Information

Thoovakali theyyam is a lesser known and rare theyyam seen during the annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival in Kannur and Kasaragod regions of Kerala. As per information, this is a male deity and is associated with livestock protection. As per Thoovakali theyyam story, the deity appeared before the head a community that earned a living through livestock. The deity offered protection of farm animals. The deity was given a place of worship. A theyyam is performed annually to invoke the blessings of the theyyam.


Thoovakali theyyam is offered prayers for early cure of serious health issues and for a good harvest and incident free rainy season. The kolam or dress and make up the theyyam varies from temple to temple.

This theyyam can be witnessed at Kankathore Kavu in Kannur, Adiyarkavu Karimchamundi Devasthanam, Kakkothe Kakkunathu Bhagavathi Temple and Thalessry Moozhikkara Chandroth Bhagavathi temple (February 3 to Feb 5).
