Mamalakalachi theyyam (മാമലകലച്ചി) is a unique theyyam performed in Kannur region during the Karkidaka Masam (July – August). The theyyam visits homes especially in and around Maadayi Kavu during the peak monsoon season in Kerala – the Karkidaka Masam. As per information, this theyyam arrives to remove all kinds of bad omens and bad luck. As per Mamalakalachi theyyam story, the natural calamities that follow heavy monsoon will be alleviated by the appearance of theyyam. The theyyam offers prayers and takes away with him all kinds of contagious diseases. It is believed that Kali and Kala both follow Mamalakalachi theyyam who drops them in the sea.
Basically, these divine beings appear in human form to
remove all kinds of difficulties that trouble during the peak monsoon season.
The theyyam first appear in Madayi Kavu on Karkidakam 16 (July 31 or August 1). Mamalakaliyan theyyam is one among the six different types of Maari theyyam performed in Kannur region of Kerala in Karkidaka Masam.
Mamalakalachi wears turmeric oh body and face and has a head
gear and the body is covered with tender coconut leaves. Traditional melam or
drums accompany the Mamalakalachi theyyam. The theyyam holds Maarikol – a traditional
stick.
Mamalakalachi moves legs to Maripattu with the accompaniment
of chengila and thudithalam.
മാടായിക്കാവിന്‍റെ പരിസരങ്ങളിലെ വീടുകളിലെഴുന്നള്ളുന്ന മാരിത്തെയ്യങ്ങള്‍ ഗൃഹാങ്കണങ്ങളില്‍ മാരിയാട്ടമാടി നാട്ടിലും വീട്ടിലും കാലടോഷങ്ങള്‍ വിതറുന്ന കലിയെ ആവാഹിച്ചെടുത്ത്‌ അറബിക്കടലിലൊഴുക്കുന്നു. അപ്പോള്‍ കാറ്റും കോളുമടങ്ങി, മാരിയും മഹാമാരിയുമടങ്ങി മലനാട്ടിലെങ്ങും മംഗളം നിറയുമെന്നാണ് പൊതുവിശ്വാസം.
പുലയസമുദായക്കാരാണ് മാരിത്തെയ്യം കെട്ടിയാടുന്നത്‌.
