Kotholi Bhagavathy Theyyam – Story – Information

Kotholi Bhagavathy theyyam is a powerful mother Goddess theyyam worshipped in a few kavu, tharavadu and temples during the annual theyyam, thira, kaliyattam festival in Pilicode region of Kasaragod region in North Kerala. As per information, this is a ferocious form of Goddess Bhagavathy. As per Kotholi Bhagavathy story, she appeared to defeat demons but her uncontrollable fury caused disturbance in the region. She was given a proper place of worship and a theyyam is performed annually to keep her calm and benign.

This form of Mother Goddess is worshipped for achieving peace and prosperity. She is worshipped to keep out contagious diseases and for early cure to health issues. She is also propitiated for desire fulfillment and to defeat enemies.

Kotholi Bhagavathy theyyam is performed on March 30 annually at the Pilicode Thekkedath Tharavadu Kudumba Trust Kunnoth. It is also performed from January 12 to January 17 at Pilicode Sree Vengakkot Bhagavathi temple and on May 13 at the Pilicode Rayaramangalam Bhagavathy Kavu temple in Kasaragod.
